Understanding the gold price
The gold price you see quoted in the news is the spot price — the cost of one troy ounce of pure (24k) gold for immediate delivery, set by continuous trading across global markets. Everything else, from a per-gram rate to the price of a 22k bangle, is derived from it.
Gold pays no interest, so its appeal rises when real interest rates fall and when investors want a hedge against inflation, currency weakness or geopolitical stress. Because it trades in US dollars, a softer dollar usually lifts the headline price and a stronger one weighs on it. Central-bank buying has also become a meaningful source of demand in recent years.
When you buy physical gold, remember the spot price is only the starting point: jewellers add making charges, dealers apply a premium over spot, and local taxes vary by country — which is why the rate you pay at a shop is always higher than the number here.
Gold price — frequently asked
What is the gold price today?
Gold is trading at $4,113.70 per troy ounce (about $132.26 per gram for 24k), down +0.65% on the day. The rate on this page updates live.
How is the price of 22k or 18k gold calculated?
Karat measures purity out of 24. To get the price of a lower karat, multiply the 24k (pure) per-gram price by the karat fraction: 22k is 22/24 (91.6%) of the pure price, 18k is 18/24 (75%), and 14k is 14/24 (58.3%). Local jewellers then add making charges and taxes on top.
What is the difference between a troy ounce and a gram?
Gold is quoted internationally in troy ounces. One troy ounce equals 31.1035 grams — slightly heavier than the everyday (avoirdupois) ounce of 28.35 g. To convert the ounce price to a per-gram price, divide by 31.1035.
Why does the gold price change constantly?
The spot price reflects live trading in global markets and reacts to US real interest rates, the strength of the dollar, central-bank buying and safe-haven demand during uncertainty. Because it is priced in dollars, a weaker dollar usually pushes the headline gold price higher.
