About the FTSE 100

The FTSE 100 lists the 100 largest companies on the London Stock Exchange. Many of them earn most of their revenue overseas, so the index is unusually sensitive to the pound — a weaker sterling often flatters it. It carries a heavy weighting in energy, mining, banks and consumer staples, which gives it a different character from the tech-led US indices.

What's inside it

The FTSE 100 is made up of 100 companies (large UK-listed firms such as Shell, AstraZeneca, HSBC, Unilever and BP), combined using a free-float market-cap weighted method and quoted in GBP. Membership and weights are reviewed periodically by the index provider, so the exact line-up shifts over time.
