Reading the metals & commodities table
These markets are quoted in different units, and mixing them up is the most common mistake. Gold, silver, platinum and palladium are priced per troy ounce — about 31.1 grams, not the 28.35 of an ordinary ounce. Copper trades in US cents per pound, crude oil per barrel, and natural gas per million British thermal units. A one-dollar move means something very different in each row, so read the percentage change rather than comparing the raw figures.
The set also splits into two groups that behave quite differently. Precious metals are held partly as a store of value, so they tend to firm when real yields fall or confidence in currencies weakens. Copper and energy are consumed by industry, which makes them a read on demand: copper in particular has a long-standing reputation as an early indicator of the industrial cycle. Watching the two groups diverge often says more than either one alone.
Prices here track front-month futures and follow exchange hours, so they pause when the market closes and resume when it reopens. If you want a consumer-facing gold rate in your own currency and karat rather than a futures quote, the gold price by country pages carry that. Figures are indicative and for information only — confirm with your broker before acting on any of them.
Frequently asked questions
Where do these metal and commodity prices come from?
Each row tracks the front-month futures contract for that commodity — the contract nearest to expiry, which is the one most actively traded and the figure normally quoted as "the" price. Values are pulled live from market data feeds and server-rendered on request.
Why does the price stop moving at the weekend?
Unlike crypto, commodity futures follow exchange sessions. They trade for most of the day on weekdays and then close entirely from Friday evening until Sunday evening. A flat price over the weekend is the market being shut, not a stale feed.
What is the difference between this page and the gold price page?
This hub indexes the whole set — precious metals plus industrial and energy commodities. The dedicated gold page goes deeper on one metal: the spot rate broken out by country and currency, and by purity in grams and tola as well as ounces.
Why do WTI and Brent crude show different prices?
They are two separate benchmarks for two different grades of oil delivered in different places — WTI in Cushing, Oklahoma and Brent from the North Sea. The gap between them widens and narrows with shipping costs, regional supply and refinery demand, which is why traders watch the spread as its own signal.
