What is Arbitrum (ARB)?
Arbitrum is a leading "layer-2" network that makes Ethereum cheaper and faster to use. Built by Offchain Labs and launched in 2021, it is an "optimistic rollup": it batches many transactions off the main chain, executes them at low cost, and posts compressed proofs back to Ethereum, inheriting Ethereum's security while cutting fees dramatically.
It has become one of the busiest scaling networks, hosting a large slice of decentralised-finance activity along with games and other apps. The ARB token, distributed to early users in a heavily covered 2023 airdrop, is a governance token: it lets holders vote on the Arbitrum DAO's decisions rather than paying for gas, which is still settled in ETH.
ARB's price is influenced by layer-2 competition, the pace of token unlocks and the health of Ethereum's ecosystem. It is a volatile asset, and everything shown here is for information only.
A handful of forces tend to move Arbitrum more than the rest: DeFi activity on the network, competition among Ethereum layer-2s, the schedule of ARB token unlocks and the health of Ethereum's ecosystem. Together they set the backdrop, though short-term moves can still catch everyone off guard.
