What is Shiba Inu (SHIB)?
Shiba Inu launched in 2020 as a self-described "Dogecoin killer", an Ethereum-based meme token that leaned into the same Shiba Inu dog theme. It was created by an anonymous founder known only as Ryoshi, who seeded half the supply to Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin — who later burned a large portion, removing it from circulation.
Unlike Dogecoin, which has its own blockchain, SHIB is an ERC-20 token and part of a wider ecosystem that includes the ShibaSwap exchange, additional tokens and Shibarium, a layer-2 network aimed at cutting fees. The community has worked to give the project more utility beyond its meme roots.
