What is Aave (AAVE)?

Aave is one of the largest decentralised lending protocols in crypto. Launched in 2020 (evolving from an earlier project called ETHLend), it lets users deposit crypto to earn interest and borrow against their holdings, all governed by smart contracts rather than a bank. Interest rates adjust automatically based on how much of each asset is being borrowed.

Aave popularised "flash loans", where funds are borrowed and repaid within a single transaction, a tool used for arbitrage and refinancing. The AAVE token is used for governance and as a backstop: it can be staked in a safety module that helps cover the protocol in the rare event of a shortfall, in exchange for rewards.

Because Aave sits at the centre of DeFi lending, its fortunes track the health of that sector and overall market risk appetite. AAVE is a volatile asset, and this page is provided for information only.

If you are trying to make sense of the Aave chart, these are the drivers we watch: borrowing and lending demand across DeFi, the total value deposited in the protocol, governance decisions on risk and fees and overall market risk appetite. Watching them helps you read the market — they are context, not a forecast.
