What is Chainlink (LINK)?

Chainlink is a decentralised "oracle" network launched in 2019 and co-founded by Sergey Nazarov. Blockchains cannot natively access data from the outside world, and Chainlink solves that problem by feeding reliable, tamper-resistant information — prices, weather, sports results and more — into smart contracts.

Its token, LINK, is used to pay the independent node operators who fetch and verify that data, and increasingly to secure newer services such as cross-chain messaging. Because so much of decentralised finance relies on accurate price feeds, Chainlink oracles underpin a large share of the value locked across the industry, which is why it is often called critical infrastructure.

Chainlink’s fortunes are tied to the growth of the wider smart-contract economy rather than to any single app. LINK is a volatile token whose price moves with adoption news and overall market sentiment. The chart, market data and technical indicators shown here are for information only and are not investment advice.

A handful of forces tend to move Chainlink more than the rest: growth of DeFi and demand for reliable price oracles, new integrations and cross-chain services, the total value secured by Chainlink feeds and general market sentiment. Watching them helps you read the market — they are context, not a forecast.
