What is Bitcoin Cash (BCH)?

Bitcoin Cash split away from Bitcoin in August 2017 after a long dispute over how to scale the network. Supporters wanted larger blocks so that more transactions could fit in each one, keeping fees low enough for everyday spending. When no compromise was reached, the chain forked and BCH began its own history with Bitcoin's pre-fork transaction record intact.

Bitcoin Cash keeps Bitcoin's proof-of-work design and 21-million-coin cap but uses much larger blocks, so transactions typically confirm cheaply. Its community leans into the "peer-to-peer electronic cash" vision from Bitcoin's original white paper, favouring low-fee payments over treating the coin mainly as a store of value.

The project has itself split again over the years, most notably spawning Bitcoin SV. BCH remains one of the better-known Bitcoin forks and a volatile asset in its own right. The chart and stats here are for information only and are not a recommendation to trade.

Zoom out and Bitcoin Cash's swings tend to come back to the same short list: its correlation with Bitcoin, use and adoption as a payments coin, developments among its forks and community and general market conditions. None of these predict where the price goes next; they just explain why it tends to move.
