What is Stellar (XLM)?
Stellar is an open payments network that went live in 2014, started by Jed McCaleb — a co-founder of Ripple — together with Joyce Kim. Its focus is narrower than most smart-contract chains: moving money, and especially converting between currencies, quickly and at almost no cost. The non-profit Stellar Development Foundation stewards the protocol rather than a for-profit company.
The network settles transactions in around five seconds and includes a built-in exchange that can swap one asset for another as a payment travels. That design is aimed at remittances, micro-payments and issuing tokenised versions of real-world currencies. Stellar has worked with fintechs and even central-bank pilots on projects along these lines.
Its token, Lumens (XLM), is used to pay tiny transaction fees and to help protect the network against spam. Supply was pre-created rather than mined, and the Foundation once burned roughly half of the original tokens. XLM is a volatile asset, and the figures on this page are informational, not financial advice.
Zoom out and Stellar's swings tend to come back to the same short list: partnerships with fintechs and payment providers, demand for cross-border and remittance rails, issuance of tokenised currencies on the network and overall crypto sentiment. They are worth knowing, but none of them hands you the next move in advance.
